It is believed that people are motivated to work because of reward and punishment, pleasure and suffering, and prize and pain. Also, we are aware of the consequences of our actions. Yet, how come in spite of the knowledge of the good and ultimate reward, we still succumb to the dark side?

Oftentimes, we are blinded by the fleeting pleasure that lead us to lose our track. In fact, in this modern day, we are driven by two forces: the culture of the instant and the principle of hard work.

The culture of the instant creates people who are experts but in a negative way, for they are skillful in shortcuts and in quick-fixing. One of the Bishops said, “Beware of people nowadays who are becoming millionaires without even a single effort”. Even the Bible stressed the importance of hard work from early Genesis 3:19, “By the sweat of your brow comes the food that you eat”.

Instant breeds laziness. Hard work breeds perseverance.

Instant makes idlers. Hard work makes key actors.

Instant is for losers. Hard work is for champions.

As a Department Head, it is my duty and responsibility to have an eye for people who exert effort and do honest work. Although at this point in time, we are already surrounded by one-click away services we still have to move our bones and bend our backs. In doing so, we may not be promoted or appreciated immediately but skills and wisdom gained will certainly remain.

Keep in mind thatwe are born to workfor many and various reasons. In our case, our purpose and sense of existence is to build the nation. Take note, that in building one, it requires a strong foundation. Thus, hard work is needed for if you would go for the culture of instant it would produce low quality of work. Therefore, we have to drop sweat to make it stand the test of time.

However, there are some instances that those who go for instants succeed, but how long will their quality last?

Hence, anyone can be called to go on stage, be recognized and applauded but not all are truly adored. Only those who work hard will receive genuine appraisal. If you want to adapt the culture of the instant, certainly the sweetness of the current days will also fade as instantly as it is.
