Teachers teaching in public elementary and secondary schools often encounter problems on how to maintain discipline in their classrooms. There are students who have unusual behavior which is hard to control. Some are always talking in loud voices with their friends that disrupt class discussion and still there are students who don’t mind the teachers’ business but do what they like to do. These are but a few causes why teachers find difficulty in maintaining discipline inside the classroom.

Teachers need to know some ways on how to maintain discipline inside the classroom. Here are some ways to choose from:

1. Create rules to be observed – children need to know what rules do they need to follow. These rules should not be dictated by the teacher but rather formulated by the whole class. Children obey rule that they created. More often than not, they don’t want to be told to do and what not to do.

2. Be considerate and loving – children like teachers who show love and concern for their welfare. They know if the teacher loves them in certain ways. When children commit mistakes and the teacher tell them to correct the error, the children feel they are loved by their teacher. Being considerate to weaknesses of children create an atmosphere of understanding. The teacher needs to look into the well-being of his learners. The children feel that they are being cared of.

3. Accept certain behavior sometimes – not all students can keep quiet at all times nor need not all disturbances to be addressed with punishment. A sharp look, a short comment or a small pause is really all that is needed. This will surely call the attention of students to behave properly while discussion is going on.

4. Give reward to good behavior – The teacher should comment good behavior of students during class interaction. The phrase ‘very good”, “good job or I’m really glad you did that” may encourage students to behave and will serve as motivation to others to strive hard. There are times that students may do something extraordinary that may warrant a larger reward then the teacher may think the appropriate one for that.

5. Model good behavior – Unknowingly, students are watching their teachers most of the time. A good personal conduct of the teacher makes a more lasting impression than her words. If you like your learner to be honest, make sure you practice honesty, if you want your student to be polite, let him see your best manners at home and in public.

There are only very few suggestions which a teacher may apply to maintain good discipline inside the classroom. There are so many ways which teachers can try of course, there is a need to consider the behavior of the students to determine what proper discipline can be imposed. There is no better substitute for one which has been tested and found effective. Would you like to try some ways in disciplining your students? Remember, there is no harm for trying.
