What is the biggest challenge that a manager has to face? Oftentimes, I hear my fellow administrators having problems handling their subordinates. However, in my case, I think the greatest challenge of a School Head is himself. Why? It is because the hardest thing a person cannot do is to control himself, particularly, his temper.

In our day to day encounter, it is very evident that self-control plays a very significant role in leading an organization. If one loses his temper toward a situation, he won’t be able to think things through critically. Obviously, he won’t be able to make sound decisions and conclusions regarding matters which require urgent attention. Therefore, instead of finding a solution, another conflict would arise. Moreover, when a leader faces people with a dark and heavy aura, he’ll also be receiving similar reactions from the crowd. As they say, a leader has to be an exemplary model. Henceforth, if he is always impatient, he should also not expect his members to extend their patience toward him.

From one of the books I read, it was shared that in order to lead an organization successfully, the leader has to have control over himself. As stated, “Discipline lives by principle rather than by emotion”. We may be perceived as emotional beings but since people have high regard of those in the position, we have to live it. Remember: the world is in the hands of the disciplined.

Moreover, if we could tame whatever is within, then our tongue will also follow. Most issues arise from harsh words. So, we better calm our nerves first before saying a word. We have to establish better attitude, principle, and moral. If we would let simple matters get into our system, then we won’t have our team members with us; we’ll sail alone.

For leaders who want to start a harmonious connection to his subordinates, here’s a simple advice: bring a thermostat. How’s that possible? It’s very simple, when things get tough, close your eyes, count one to three, take a deep breath, and pray.
