Engagement of Learners in the Utilization of Case Study Approach

The use of case study approach is most of the times perceived as a difficult approach in an active learning process. The said approach involves problem-based learning wherein it promotes the development of analytical skill of the learners. In addition, this approach promotes higher order thinking skills in Bloom’s taxonomy of cognitive learning. This student-centered approach strategy in teaching hones the critical thinking skills, interpersonal skills and communicative style of the learners.

Case study approach was considered as an innovative method of teaching Science to our learners around twenty years ago, the said approach rose to fame in the different fields of scientific disciplines in the recent years such as psychology, chemistry, biology and nursing. In fact, the case study approach can facilitate interdisciplinary learning which can be utilized to bridge in the connections between other academic topics and as well, real-world societal issues and applications.

Utilizing this approach is not as difficult as it may seem. In order to unlock the difficulties which may be encountered while administering this approach, the teacher must first know what to unpack to the learners. But the key to successfully administering this approach is the choice of the case study. The case study should focus on one issue only and as well, must have a clear problem statement. The teacher must choose a case study that matches the learning objectives wherein it will allow the learners to apply what they have learned in assessing the scenario. There might be few obstacles which could be encountered while utilizing this approach but anyway, learning does not happen overnight.
