According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, innovation is defined as new ideas, devices, or methods: the act or process of introducing new ideas, devices, or methods. Since I am handling children with exceptionality specifically hearing impaired, the teaching methods, strategies and also the instructional materials (IMs) are expected to be different and specially designed. Thus, when I have to teach my SPED class how to retell a story, instead of using handouts, books or video clips, I decided to create my own book, which is bigger than the usual size. It has pictures with explanation for each scene. The words used are specifically the words they are already familiar with to make them understand the flow of the story easily.

Words of hearing impaired students are limited, and in this world where only few can understand them, it is our duty as more knowledgeable to do the adjustments”. It is really fulfilling on my part to see their eyes glow with wisdom after finally getting the idea of the lesson I’m teaching them. With the help of the giant book especially made for them, my hearing impaired students and I were able to meet halfway. In fact, when they heard of the deaf awareness activity where there would be a story telling contest, they got excited. As a result, they got the first place in the story telling contest using the giant book I made.
