“To teach those with special needs, you need not only a heart but a heart that beats for them.”

Listening is very essential particularly in the life of a teacher. Listen: one of the most overused words in the classroom. And even in silence, listening cannot always be proven present. They said, you must not only hear but you must also listen. And according to my observation this can only be done by using both ears. My teacher in college even drew two ears then combined those to form a heart shape. I was amazed! However, I was not able to totally understand what she exactly meant that time. Realization struck me when I was already practicing my profession. I realized that in listening you should really use your heart. By doing so, you will be able to successfully understand what was said.

On the other hand, what if your student has hearing impairment? Are those both ears still useful? How can you hear them? Can you still understand them?

Sometimes, people forgot that this world is not only made up of words in order to communicate. This world is also filled with signs and symbols: a kind of language which was often neglected and unnoticed.

If people who could hear need both ears to listen, what about those people who could not hear?

The answer is very simple. It is just right in our hands. Together, let us learn their language in order to bridge the gap. We have two hands to make our hearts understand. Use those and everything will follow.
